We’re chatting with Lucas Samuels, Senior Marketing Manager at Florence this week on Behind the Scenes.

Lucas is a jack-of-all-trades marketer who has spent more than a decade building brands throughout Canada.

Who are you, and what do you do at Florence?

I’m Lucas, and I lead our marketing efforts here in Toronto.

It’s my job to make Florence a well-known and well-respected brand in the healthcare industry here in Canada. That means my efforts are focused on building brand awareness and ensuring that both healthcare professionals and healthcare organizations know that Florence is the best option when it comes to staffing.

What made you want to join Florence?

Florence's mission is to fix the broken staffing model for good by using innovation and technology. After seeing family members be directly affected by the staffing crisis during the pandemic, I was happy to learn how Florence was able to create positive change in the industry.

Florence is a company that genuinely wants to fix a broken model with the ultimate goal of making patient care better, and that really resonated with me.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

It’s only a mistake if you don’t learn from it. Both within and outside of the workplace, nobody is perfect. It’s important to see a misstep as an opportunity to learn and move forward.

What’s your favourite thing about working at Florence?

Working with a small team that's focused on creating positive change in the healthcare industry. Being in Toronto means we get to be part of a start-up within a larger business. That's a special opportunity.

What’s the biggest challenge Florence is facing at the moment? ‍

Anytime you’re trying to create meaningful change in an industry, you’ll get pushback. In my opinion, we’re competing less with other companies and more with existing behaviours. Just because we believe that booking shifts with pen-and-paper is inefficient, doesn’t mean that someone is willing to stop doing that even if there’s an easier way. It’s our job to change that behaviour respectfully.

What’s a fun fact about you that might surprise us?

I was a published music writer and podcast host in a past life.

What piece of advice would you give to someone thinking about joining Florence? ‍

If you’re looking for a place to work where you’ll be able to take control of your career destiny, Florence might be the place for you.

Where do you see Florence in five years?

When people in the healthcare industry think of the best way to approach staffing, Florence is the name that immediately comes to mind.
